Ipswich is located approximately 40 kilometres west of the Brisbane Central Business District.

The Ipswich district settled was by European colonists in 1826, lead by Captain Patrick Logan, when they sailed up the Brisbane River and discovered deposits of limestone.

Ipswich was first known as Limestone, in 1843 it was renamed after the town of Ipswich of England.In 1851 it had a population of 932 and 2459 by 1856. Ipswich officially became a municipality in 1858. Ipswich was a contender to become the capital of Queensland, but missed out to Brisbane in 1859.

Ipswich has a population of 180,000 and is part of the urban sprawl of the 20th century. Ipswich is home to the RAAF Base Amberley, famous for it’s now retired fleet of F1-11 jet bombers. Now home to the F18 super hornet and c-17 Globemaster. Ipswich is also home to the University of Queensland campus and The workshops Railway Museum.

Local Shopping Centres have been developed east of Ipswich at Springfield. Along with a off-shoot campus for the University of Southern Queensland, main campus being located in Toowoomba. Redbank Plaza shopping centre has a large cinema complex and four floors of shopping. More retail centres are being developed in areas outside of Ipswich at Brassall and Karalee on the north, Yamanto in the South, and Booval to the east of the city.
